Happy Deepavali 2022 in Little India, Bangkok
The Diwali season of the year 2022 was a historic occasion for Indians in Thailand. For the very first time, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration- with active encouragement from the newly elected Governor Khun Chadchart Sittipunt, organized a 3-day event “Deepawali 2022’ from October 21 to 23 at Little India in the Phaurat area.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad Association Thailand was proud to be the co-host along with the IAT. Sponsors came forward to laud and support this inaugural celebration at an official level.
An entire area adjacent to the Klong Ong Ang area was earmarked for the event. Divided into two sections, one area served as a marketplace selling typically traditional food, clothing, and accessories. Another area, wholly organized by the VHP, served as a haven for the divinely inspired. A wonderful setup of Lord Ganesha, God of Wisdom and widely worshipped in Thailand as a remover of obstacles took prime space. Also present was Mata Laxmi, Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity who all Hindus pray to during Diwali.
Among the most popular stalls were the free Mehandi (henna), free tea and snacks for all, and the flower and Loy Krathong stalls. An exuberant team from ISKCON danced away to the glory of Lord Krishna. Many of our members, visitors, and VVIP guests matched them, step for step. The Brahmakumaris also spread their message of peace, love, and brotherhood.
The Cultural program every evening saw throngs of people getting a glimpse of the wonderful traditions and culture of India through folk dances and classical singing. A major highlight was children still in the single-digit age group reading out shlokas from the Bhagawad Geeta and then explaining the meaning – all without reading!
The footfall was many times more than expected and crossed the 100,000 mark. High-ranking officials from the Governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt to other officials were warmly welcomed.
The VHP Association Thailand thanks the BMA and the Governor for the cooperation rendered and will make this annual event bigger and better.
